In cities with a Chinatown, weekend mornings bring dim sum carts or order sheets, and lines form early at the most popular spots in Staten Island; walk-ins are standard and reservations are uncommon outside large banquet restaurants. Regional labels matter: Cantonese, Sichuan, Hunan, Shanghainese and Taiwanese kitchens cook very differently, so a restaurant's stated region is a better guide to the food than the word "Chinese" alone. Some smaller restaurants in New York are BYOB with no corkage fee; call ahead to confirm. A tip of 15-20% is customary for table service but not expected at counter-order takeout. Spice level, MSG and allergen questions are normal to ask before ordering, and most kitchens are happy to leave an ingredient out or tone down the heat if you mention it when ordering rather than after the food arrives.

The business lists hours on 7 days of the week. Typical hours are 11 am–10 pm. As with most places, expect changes around holidays; the phone number below is the fastest way to confirm. Staten Island is in New York, in the Northeast, where four distinct seasons shape local life: hot humid summers, snowy winters that can close businesses for a day, and a dense pattern of towns where walking, transit and street parking all matter. Getting around Staten Island is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across New York's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

Jac Mao on Hylan Blvd in Staten Island delivered a solid Chinese meal. I ordered the beef with broccoli, honey walnut shrimp, and Peking duck. The beef with broccoli was tender and well-sauced with crisp broccoli that still had some bite. The honey walnut shrimp hit the right balance of sweet and savory with crunchy walnuts and plump shrimp that weren’t overcooked. The Peking duck was the standout: crispy skin, flavorful meat, and properly prepared. Portions were generous and the food came out tasting fresh. If you’re in the mood for reliable Chinese classics on Staten Island, Jac Mao is worth a visit. Highly recommend the three dishes I tried.

J’s Mao (Jac Mao) on Hylan Boulevard has been a family favorite for years. We used to live nearby and ordered takeout regularly, but nothing beats enjoying a freshly prepared meal in the restaurant. What really sets J’s Mao apart for our family is their extensive gluten-free options. As a parent of a daughter with celiac disease, finding safe and delicious Chinese food can be challenging. One of the things she missed most after her diagnosis was being able to enjoy her favorite Chinese dishes. During our recent visit, it was just the two of us, and we were thrilled that everything we ordered could be prepared gluten-free, including the chow fun, chicken with broccoli, and fried rice. One item I can never resist is the basket of fried noodles they serve before the meal. They’re thicker, crispier, and more flavorful than those you’ll find at most Chinese restaurants, and it’s always tempting to ask for another refill. I wish there was a gluten free options for these. The service is consistently friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is comfortable and welcoming. If you’re looking for great Chinese food, especially if you need gluten-free options, J’s Mao is absolutely worth a

I don’t usually leave reviews, but this place absolutely deserves one. The sushi was some of the freshest I’ve ever had—everything is incredibly high quality and well-made. On top of that, the buy-two-get-one deal is a great bonus. Definitely worth trying if you’re looking for really good sushi.

Food was good. Prices were reasonable. Service was questionable... I went here yesterday with three of my friends and they did not let us eat in peace at all, they kept watching us eat and circling our table giving weird/dirty looks as if they were waiting for us to do something? I did not feel comfortable eating there at all. There were other tables of people and they were not giving them the same treatment. Do with that information what you will. Also they failed to tell us there was a mandatory tip until I asked about it when I read the bill.

Our first time visiting. Nicely decorated big open room. The staff and owner super personable. The food was absolutely fantastic. We got the ribs, general tsao, beef with broccoli and young chow fried rice. I can't wait to go back to try more things!
